Website Usability Testing
Website usability testing determines how useful a website
is to its target audience. Modcom is the only Sacramento communications
firm that conducts website usability testing for various clients.
The following represents our approach to usability testing.
First, we identify five to ten people who represent our client’s
target audience to participate in an evaluation of the client’s
site. The participants are invited to take part in a one-hour,
one-on-one site evaluation. It is customary to pay participants
$50 to $100 to attend.
When participants arrive they are seated at the computer
and guided through a series of goal-specific tasks to perform
on our client’s site, such as "go to the frequently
asked questions section" or "try to sign on as a
new user". The participants are encouraged to think out
loud as they move through the tasks, and their session is notated
and videotaped. Their ease or difficulty in completing these
tasks will indicate where our client’s website is working
well, and where it needs improvement. The results of the evaluations
are documented, and we generate a website usability report
on our findings.
Usability testing can be performed while a website is still
in production, or can be used to guide a site redesign. In
conjunction with site traffic software, usability testing results
can also be used to solicit advertisers and investors.
