What is the Christmas Day Meals on Wheels Program?

The Meals on Wheels Program is a county nutritional program offering services to the elderly five days a week. We do it on Christmas Day because they don’t have anyone deliver meals when their employees are off on holidays. We gather, prepare and deliver meals to elderly people who otherwise wouldn’t get a meal.

How many people does it serve?

Well, we have been doing this for 15 years. When we started out we delivered 80 meals. This year we will deliver about 400.

How do you find the people?

I get a list of people from the county nutritional program. The county delivery people find out who will need a meal and compile a list for us.

What motivates you to do this kind of volunteer work?

Well, I have always done something. I was motivated to do this program one day when I was sitting in the firehouse reading the newspaper. I read an article about how the elderly in the Meals on Wheels program wouldn’t have a Christmas dinner. Next thing I knew, I was on the phone telling them I would take care of it without any idea what I was going to do or how I was going to do it. So, I lobbied a friend with a restaurant and told him that I had just obligated him to help me with this project.

What can the public do to help?

Well, the public can help by doing what my daughter did. Find a holiday where people in need aren’t getting a meal and start a program. My daughter started a Thanksgiving Day program like this one for SMUD.

How long do you see yourself doing this for?

Well, if a time comes when I am no longer involved in this, then I will probably be involved in something else. I have been doing this kind of volunteer work all my life.

What is your personal philosophy?

Do unto others as you want to be done by. For me, what you see here is what I am. I have always done something to help people. My philosophy in life is helping people.
