Save the Snowy Plover
Project Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists the Western Snowy
Plover, a sparrow-sized shorebird, as a threatened species.
Their population breeds along the Pacific coast from the State
of Washington to Mexico. The Snowy Plover's habitat is threatened
by human disturbance and non-native predators. Their nesting
season coincides with the time beaches are most heavily used
by people, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Our Role
Modcom researched, planned and facilitated a three-day offsite
retreat for the 21-member working group tasked with ensuring
the survival of the Snowy Plover. Modcom also worked in collaboration
with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop and produce
workshop materials. Agencies represented in the working group
included the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. National
Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey and the California Department
of Fish and Game. Modcom's job was to bring together the many
agencies involved in this important work, and facilitate their
movement toward a common vision. The end goal of this retreat
was to implement a strategic plan for the recovery of the Snowy
Plover.
