California Area Indian Health Service
Project Description
The State of California is home to the largest population of American Indians/Alaska
Natives in the country. The primary goal of Indian Health Service is to raise
the health status of American Indians to the highest possible level. To achieve
this goal, the California Area supports tribal governments and urban Indian
communities in the development and administration of comprehensive health
care delivery systems that meet the needs of Indian people.
Our Role
Modcom has developed various projects to support the Indian Health Service
including: designing, developing and maintaining their website; agency user
task analyses; and providing public health nursing staff for their diabetes
tracking and awareness program.
Modcom also custom-built an intranet requisition software system for our client.
We worked in collaboration with our client to transform a paper-based requisition
system into a comprehensive, automated online format which could be accessed
either from their office or, when necessary, from the field. The system incorporates
user-friendly online forms, electronic signature protocols, extensive searchable
databases, self-maintenance administrators, fail-safes and e-mail message reminders
and prompts. We first conducted user task analyses to determine the existing
workflow of the paper system, and then used that information to build the online
model. The result was a streamlined, efficient online system that still felt
familiar to employees. We met our client's primary goals: to enable its employees
to initiate and approve requisitions from the field, thereby speeding up the
approval process and meeting new federal mandates regarding the needed ability
to work from a remote location, if necessary.
